Vers 1

Op U betrouw ik, HEER der heren,
Op U, gelijk ‘t betaamt;
Ai, laat mij nooit, beschaamd,
Van Uwen troon teruggekeren;
Help mij, op mijn gebeden,
Door Uw gerechtigheden.

Vers 2

Och, neig tot mij Uw gunstig’ oren,
Schiet haastig toe; dat mij
Uw naam een rotssteen zij;
Een huis, een welgesterkte toren,
Die, op een klip verheven,
Mij veiligheid kan geven.

Vers 3

Gij zijt alleen (wat zou ik vrezen?)
Mijn rots, mijn burcht, o HEER!
Ja, Uwen Naam ter eer,
Zult Gij mij tot een herder wezen.
Mijn Helper, scheur de netten,
Die z' in 't verborgen zetten.

Agtergrond

Psalm 31 is traditionally ascribed to David and dates to the post‑exilic period, reflecting a personal lament during persecution or exile. Theologically it intertwines covenant trust with messianic hope, portraying Yahweh as both refuge and deliverer.

Kernboodskap

The psalmist, though surrounded by enemies and suffering, places unwavering hope in God, describing Him as a rock, fortress, and shepherd who rescues the afflicted. This hope is rooted not in circumstances but in God’s steadfast love and faithfulness.

Vir vandag

Believers today can echo this hope by turning to God in crisis, trusting that He governs even the deepest anguish and provides spiritual shelter. The psalm invites a posture of honest lament paired with confident reliance on divine rescue.
