Penitential psalms

8 psalms

From ancient times the church has known seven penitential psalms: Psalm 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130 and 143. In them the psalmist confesses guilt and pleads for forgiveness. Psalm 51 (after David's fall) and Psalm 130 ("Out of the depths") are the best known; they are heard especially in Lent and on days of prayer.
