Vers 1

O HEER', Gij zijt welda - - dig;
Straf mij niet ongenadig
In Uwen toornegloed,
Ai, matig Uw kastijden;
Sla mij met medelijden,
Gelijk een vader doet.

Vers 2

Vergeef mij al mijn zon - den,
Die Uwe hoogheid schonden;
Ik ben verzwakt, o HEER!
Genees mij, red mijn leven;
Gij ziet mijn beend'ren beven;
Zo slaat Uw hand mij neer.

Vers 3

Mijn ziel, gans neergebo - gen,
Schrikt voor Uw heilig' ogen,
In dezen jammerstaat.
Hoe lang zal ik nog klagen?
Hoe lang Uw gramschap dragen,
O HEER, mijn toeverlaat?
Insight & depth

Background

Psalm 6 is a penitential psalm traditionally ascribed to David, likely composed during a period of personal crisis such as illness or persecution in the united monarchy (10th c. BC). It reflects the ancient Near‑Eastern view of divine justice, where the psalmist appeals to God’s mercy while acknowledging his own sinfulness. Theologically it introduces the motif of suffering as a catalyst for sincere repentance and divine deliverance.

Core message

The psalmist moves from anguished pleading for relief—describing physical and spiritual torment—to confident assurance that God hears his prayer and will vindicate him, illustrating a journey from despair to hopeful trust in God’s steadfast love.

For today

Today believers can identify with moments of intense suffering and use honest lament as a prayerful entry point to God’s compassion, trusting that even in deep pain God’s fidelity offers hope. The psalm encourages a posture of humility, repentance, and expectation of divine rescue in personal crises.
