Psalm 78

Vers 1

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Give ear, my people, listen as I teach you
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) and let the words of my instruction reach you.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) The wisdom that on God’s decrees is founded
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) will be to you in parables expounded.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) Their hidden truths I will for you unfold –
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) the things our fathers taught us from of old.

Vers 2

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)These we’ll pass on, not from their children hide them,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) that those accounts of bygone days may guide them,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) and we will tell the coming generation
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) how God has dealt with Israel, his nation –
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) the wondrous works the LORD for them has done,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) the glory that his mighty hand has won.

Vers 3

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)To Israel he gave his revelation,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) his law as Jacob’s ever-firm foundation,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) and all our fathers he, the LORD, commanded
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) to make it known to those from them descended,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) that also they might pass it on in turn
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) and teach his law to children not yet born.

Vers 4

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Then they would put their trust in God their Saviour
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) and not forget his deeds of love and favour,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) nor come to share their fathers’ condemnation,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) that stubborn and rebellious generation
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) whose spirits were not faithful to the LORD,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) by whom God was rejected and ignored.

Vers 5

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)The Ephraimites with bows for war assembled,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) yet they in battle all turned back and trembled.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) They did not keep God’s covenant but denied him,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) despised his law and shamelessly defied him,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) forgot what he had done for them alone,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) the miracles that he to them had shown.

Vers 6

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)God worked great marvels, and their fathers saw them;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) in Egypt’s land, in Zoän, wonders awed them.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) There he the waves for Israel divided
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) and through the sea his chosen people guided.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) He made the water stand up like a heap;
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) his mighty hand restrained the roaring deep.

Vers 7

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)By day he gave a cloud to lead and guide them;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) with fiery light did he all night provide them.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) Drink as abundant as the seas he gave them;
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) he split the rocks, and springs welled up to save them.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) From barren crags he made fresh fountains burst,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) and rivers flowed to quench his people’s thirst.

Vers 8

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)God in the desert gave them his protection,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) yet they rebelled; his mercy met rejection.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) In sin and disobedience they persisted,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) and God Most High they boldly tried and tested.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) In stubborn pride, defiantly they raved,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) demanding from his hand the food they craved.

Vers 9

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)They slighted God and said,“Will he be able
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) to spread us in the wilderness a table?
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) He struck the rock, we saw the fountains gushing
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) and streams of water through the desert rushing,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) but can he also give his people bread
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) and bring us meat so that we will be fed?”

Vers 10

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Therefore the LORD, who heard their provocation,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) was full of wrath against his chosen nation.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) His fiery rage against all Israel mounted;
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) his anger rose, for never they recounted
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) what he had done to help them in their plight;
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) they did not trust his saving power and might.

Vers 11

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Yet to the skies God’s orders then were given;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) he opened wide the very doors of heaven.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) God showed his mercy, Israel sustaining
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) with plenteous manna down upon them raining.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) The food of angels gave he them for bread,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) and with the grain of heaven they were fed.

Vers 12

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)The east wind he called up from heaven’s borders,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) led forth the south wind to obey his orders,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) and on their wings they brought what God had given,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) for quails, like dust that by a storm is driven,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) rained down upon them from the darkened sky;
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) then they had meat in plentiful supply.

Vers 13

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)They ate and were well filled with what they wanted;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) what they had craved, that he had freely granted.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) They gorged themselves, and while they celebrated,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) with food still in their mouth and greed unsated,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) God’s anger rose against them, and they died;
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) he slew their strongest men, their flower and pride.

Vers 14

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)But still they sinned and did not cease to grieve him;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) despite his wonders they would not believe him.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) Their days he ended, and like fog they vanished;
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) with sudden death and terror they were punished.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) But when he slew them, they would once again
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) return to him, repenting of their sin.

Vers 15

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Then they remembered God, their Rock and Saviour,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) the Most High God who with redeeming favour
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) had brought them from the land that had enslaved them.
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) They flattered him, yet thought that he would save them.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) Though with their lips they might fine words express,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) they scorned his covenant in their faithlessness.

Vers 16

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Yet he in pity and in lovingkindness
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) forgave them their iniquity and blindness,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) did not destroy them when his wrath was burning,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) but he restrained the anger they kept earning,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) remembering that they were but mortal men,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) a passing breeze that will not come again.

Vers 17

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)How often they would all rebel and leave him!
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) How often they would in the desert grieve him!
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) They kept on testing him, his love denying,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) the Holy One of Israel defying,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) and they forgot the glorious day when he
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) redeemed his people from their enemy.

Vers 18

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Through wondrous deeds he Israel delivered;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) he turned to blood all Egypt’s mighty rivers.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) By swarms of flies its people were tormented,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) and with a plague of frogs they were confronted.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) Their crops he to the hungry locust gave;
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) their fields were left with nothing they could save.

Vers 19

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)With hail and sleet their vines and trees he shattered;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) their cattle he with bolts of lightning scattered.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) He loosed on them his wrath and indignation,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) brought them distress and widespread devastation.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) Destroying angels he among them sent,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) who brought great ruin everywhere they went.

Vers 20

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Free rein he gave to his consuming anger;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) from death he did not spare them any longer
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) but gave them up to plague and devastation.
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) He in the tents of Ham brought desolation;
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) their firstborn he struck down, and they all died –
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) their eldest sons, all Egypt’s joy and pride.

Vers 21

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Then like a shepherd he his people guided,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) and in the desert they in him confided.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) He led his flock, and without fear they followed,
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) for all their foes the raging sea had swallowed.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) Thus to his holy land he brought his own,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) to hills and dales which his right hand had won.

Vers 22

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Before them he drove out the heathen nations,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) apportioned to the tribes their habitations,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) and in their tents they safely found a dwelling.
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) Yet they, against the Most High God rebelling,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) cast off his laws and him no longer served,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) and, like their fathers, from his ways they swerved.

Vers 23

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)They like a faulty bow, all warped and twisting,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) provoked God’s anger when, in sin persisting,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) they with their heathen worship made him jealous;
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) in serving worthless idols they were zealous.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) Great was God’s wrath when he saw them rebel.
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) He utterly rejected Israel.

Vers 24

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)From Shiloh’s tent, his dwelling, he departed,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) forsook those who were faithless and false-hearted.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) He to the clutches of the foe surrendered
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) his holy ark, the symbol of his splendour.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) In anger that his word had been ignored,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) he gave his people over to the sword.

Vers 25

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)Their young men were consumed as flames drew near them;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) their maidens had no wedding songs to cheer them.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) Their priests fell by the sword of heathen nations;
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) their widows could not voice their lamentations.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) The land was ravaged by the godless foe,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) and all endured great misery and woe.

Vers 26

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)He then turned back to those he had forsaken;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) as from deep slumber did the LORD awaken,
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) just like a warrior who with wine is heated.
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) He struck his foes until they all retreated,
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) and as they fled, he at their backs took aim;
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) he put them all to everlasting shame.

Vers 27

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)The tents of Joseph’s offspring he rejected,
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) nor was his house in Ephraïm erected.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) But he chose Judah’s tribe in his good pleasure –
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) Mount Zion, which he loved, his pride and treasure.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) He built his temple like the heavenly heights,
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) firm like the earth, enduring by his might.

Vers 28

Notenbalk regel 1 (iso)Notenbalk regel 1 (rit)He chose his servant David, and he crowned him;
Notenbalk regel 2 (iso)Notenbalk regel 2 (rit) he took him from the sheepfolds where he found him.
Notenbalk regel 3 (iso)Notenbalk regel 3 (rit) From tending ewes and newborn lambs he brought him;
Notenbalk regel 4 (iso)Notenbalk regel 4 (rit) to make him Jacob’s shepherd, God had sought him.
Notenbalk regel 5 (iso)Notenbalk regel 5 (rit) And David led his flock with skilful hand;
Notenbalk regel 6 (iso)Notenbalk regel 6 (rit) with upright heart he governed all the land.
